my little sweetness...mabel...was tragically hit by a car this morning and i am feeling so empty and lost without her presence. though she was not even two years old, i like to think she made the very most of her short time here...always curious, always active, always loving.
i am so thankful to have had her in our family...as my dad reminded me, it is these very connections to animals and people that enrich our lives and bring us so much joy. i am thankful, too, that i was able to hold her at the end, her broken body still warm and soft. she will be missed and loved forever and ever and ever and ever.

I remember the first time we spent the night at your house. It was only the afternoon, but from our long trip up (and the afternoon drinks) we were tired and decided to take a nap. We were sleeping in the room over the living room and Nathan headed upstairs first while I still remained downstairs with Carrie. All I remember was that a few minutes later Nathan bursted out in giggles and screamed, get this kitten out of here! Apparently, every time moved or rolled over or changed position, Mabel would re-assert herself so she could stare right at him - close - never more than 3 inches from his face. So he (again) would roll over and feel himself drifting off to sleep and would open his eyes ever so slightly before entering a deep sleep only to see this little cat face STARING at him INTENTLY - after which he would yelp since it was just so weird. At which point Mabel (delighted) would begin to purr really loudly at having woke our boy. This would repeat over and over - she never tired and would not be happy six feet away - but always, right up next to our faces when we slept.

Poem (As the cat)

As the cat
climbed over
the top of

the jamcloset
first the right
forefoot

carefully
then the hind
stepped down
into the pit of
the empty
flowerpot

- William Carlos Williams

we are so sorry for you loss

The yellow fog that rubs its back upon the window-panes,
The yellow smoke that rubs its muzzle on the window-panes
Licked its tongue into the corners of the evening,
Lingered upon the pools that stand in drains,
Let fall upon its back the soot that falls from chimneys,
Slipped by the terrace, made a sudden leap,
And seeing that it was a soft October night,
Curled once about the house, and fell asleep.

(T.S. Eliot, "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock)

the image of this fog/cat has always stuck with me. it seems to say that the tenderness, love, and warmth that our little furry friends afford us, actually exists all around us, like a fog twisting gently in and out of buildings. especially now, i hope it reminds you that your darling mabel is still with you, lingering about the house, licking corners, rubbing her muzzle on windowpanes, slipping, leaping, and occasionally, on a soft october night, curled beside you asleep.

i love you.

Dearest Mabel,

My wish for you sweet Mabes,

I wish for you a heaven with wide open fields to frolic in, full of birds and bugs and plump tasty mice.

Your heaven will have a loving lap to come home to, in a warm, cozy house, complete with all the cat nip, warm milk and kitty treats you care to ingest.

Void of fleas, pesky dogs or visits to the vet, your heaven will be blanketed with wonderfulness and love sent from home.

Rest in peace, dear kitty.
